A WISE Move

OWL's cinderella story began when our plucky heroine decided to ditch 9 - 5 and start a publishing business. She cut her business teeth at Women’s Initiative for Self Employment (WISE), an amazing organization that helps "lower-income, high potential" women gain economic independence through becoming entrepreneurs. Watch "Beyond One Woman" an original short film produced by WISE and learn about our heroine's great leap and others who found their entrepreneurial wings: http://www.womensinitiative. org/video/Ripple.wmv.

A Hand Up ... Not a Hand Out

OWL participated in the 2006 “World of Good Auction,” which raised over $14,000 for Handup Congo! To learn more about this amazing effort and the über-easy things you can do to support it, check out: www.handupcongo.org

The View From Up Here

OWL is a featured guest on a live taping of The View From The Bay on KGO-7. Our fearless leader - on a dare - took up the challenge of composing an on-the-spot mini-narrative for the hosts, Spencer Christian and Janelle Wang, en route to the show! Now that’s what we call Workin’ It!

Hanging Out (At Sea) with the Girls!

Our heroine gets wet and wild on The Tall Ship Academy's three-day Women's Challenge. The challenge raises money for its semester-at-sea program for teenage girls. To learn more about Tracy's voyage and the program check out her article,

"Women Brave Wind and Rain in Women’s Challenge VI" - http://www.tallshipacademy.org/pdfs/May2007.pdf.

Literacy is Our Birthright

We are passionate about advancing literacy worldwide. Toward that end we donated a portion of our 2007 BEA sales to ProLiteracy Worldwide (www.proliteracy.org).

News WE Can Use

It's easy to complain about the news, but we decided to do something about it! We're an Oakland-based start up, and as such, we want to share all that makes this a great city and a great community. Through a fortuitous connection we connected with Aimee Allison, KPFA producer, writer, political analyst, and rebel-rouser at the launch of her new community media venture: www.oaklandseen.com (cool, huh!) Our IT girl, Tracy, now writes for the site. The focus is on stories of people and organizations making a positive impact and the response has been wonderful!

In other news, you know we have a bone to pick with those who think "happily ever after" is just for married (straight) folks! So, we've taken up the call and write a column as the Oakland-Single-Women Examiner (for www.examiner.com). In it, we break down the bunk of a notion that one ending fits all and that only couples get to feel all soft and cuddly! It's fun, it's light, and it might just give you a few cool ideas for a night on your own - check it out!

Last, but not least, our tastes just can't be confined to this or that, sometimes we need the freedom to break out and explore a range of topics, from meditation to the meaning of fruit salad. On said occasions we ramble on a site called www.hubpages.com. If you want to know what we (and other writers) are thinking at 2:34am on any given Monday, check this site out!
